Potassium nitrate fertilizer is type of soluble fertilizer that supplies two macro-nutrients namely potassium and nitrogen to plants.

Potassium nitrate fertilizer supplies nitrogen to plants in nitrate form. Plants use nitrate nitrogen immediately as it does not need to be converted to another form of nitrogen by plants. There is also a good synergy between potassium and nitrogen when potassium nitrate fertilizer is applied to plants.

Potassium nitrate is chloride free; this makes it ideal for crops that are sensitive to chloride. Potassium nitrate is a high quality fertilizer that can significantly increase the yield of crops.

Crops Potassium Nitrate Fertilizer can be used for and how to apply it

Almond: 90 – 100 kg of potassium nitrate to be applied to one acre. This should be applied in bits through fertigation. The application will ensure that the crop removal of potassium and nitrogen from the soil will be replaced.

Apple: 90 – 110 kg of potassium nitrate fertilizer should be added to one acre of apple. This ensures that fast acting nitrogen nitrate and potassium can be well used by the apple crop.

Beans: 40- 100 kg of potassium nitrate should be fertigated to one acre of beans.

Broccoli: 45- 120 kg of potassium nitrate should be added to one acre of broccoli as this will ensure that lost nutrients are replaced and the crop gets accurate dosage of nitrogen and potassium.

Cabbage: 40- 120 kg of potassium nitrate should be applied to one acre of cabbage.

Carrot: Apply up to 45-192 /acre through fertigation to carrot. Carrot does well when fast acting nitrate and potassium is used during its growth stage.

Cauliflower: Apply up to 40-200 kg /acre to cauliflower plants. Soil analysis should be done before applying potassium nitrate fertilizer.

Oranges: 60- 150 kg of potassium nitrate fertilizer should be added to one acre of orange crop. Soil analysis must be done before application of potassium nitrate. Fertigation route may be used for the application of this fertilizer.

Cotton: 40- 140 kg of potassium nitrate fertilizer should be added to one acre of cotton. When potassium nitrate fertilizer is optimally used, the incidences of some diseases in cotton crop can be reduced.

Cucumber (field grown): 45 – 120 kg of potassium nitrate should be applied through fertigation in small doses to an acre of cucumber crop. A soil analysis should be done before potassium nitrate is added to cucumber plants.

Grapes: 50- 450 kg of potassium nitrate should be applied to an acre of grapes. Fertigation method should be used for applying the fertilizer. Also, the fertilizer should be applied according to the growth stage of the crop.

Lettuce: Apply up to 45-192kg /acre, application should be done according to the result of the soil analysis. Fertigation method should also be used for the application of potassium nitrate to lettuce.

Pepper (field grown): Apply up to 45-192 kg /acre , the quantity of potassium nitrate to be applied to pepper should be known after soil analysis. Fertigation method should be used for the application of potassium nitrate to pepper plants.

Spinach: 40 – 180 kg of potassium nitrate fertilizer should be applied to spinach according to the soil analysis. Fertigation method is advised to be used for the application of this fertilizer.

Strawberry (field grown): 45 – 140 kg of potassium nitrate fertilizer should be applied to an acre of field grown strawberry. This fertilizer should be fertigated using the drip irrigation system.

Tobacco: Potassium nitrate fertilizer should be applied to tobacco crop according the result of the soil test.

Tomato (field grown): 40 – 200 kg of potassium nitrate should be applied to an acre of tomato. Tomato crop does well when it uses fast acting nitrogen nitrate and potassium which potassium nitrate fertilizer has.

Other crops that potassium nitrate fertilizer can be used for include:

  • Cocoa and other tree and fruit crops
  • All vegetable crops
  • Fodder and grasses
  • Flower etc.

Benefits of Potassium Nitrate Fertilizer

The following are the benefits of the nutrients in Potassium Nitrate fertilizer:

Benefits of Potassium (K)

  • Potassium ensures the efficient movement of water, carbohydrate and nutrients in plant tissues.
  • Potassium enhances the taste of fruit, quality, colour and shelf life of fruits.
  • Potassium makes plants resist stresses like adverse weather conditions, pests and diseases.
  • Potassium ensures that the plants’ cells and tissues are turgid.
  • Potassium enhances photosynthesis.
  • Potassium also enhances root development in plants.

The benefits of Nitrogen (N)

  • Nitrogen ensures the production of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll ensures that photosynthesis takes place in plants.
  • Nitrogen ensures that plants tissues and cells develop well.
  • Nitrogen enhances the production of amino acid in plants.
