Characteristics of Roundup Herbicide
The following are the characteristics of Roundup herbicide:
- Roundup contains 360g glyphosate acid/L (in the form of 360g/L Glyphosate – Isopropylamine salt) in water-based concentrate.
- It has a low spray volume. 70 – 100 litres of Roundup solution or mix can be used to control weeds in a one hectare farmland.
- Roundup herbicide is manufactured with surfactants, this makes the herbicide to stick well to the surfaces of the weeds and eventually lead to the death of the weeds.
- Roundup herbicide has an excellent weed control ability. It can control a lot of weeds.
- Roundup herbicide has a non-selective and non-residual action on weeds.
Benefits of using Roundup herbicide
The following are the benefits of using Roundup herbicide:
- It can be used for weed control; this can indirectly lead to increase in crop yield. Weeds can reduce crop yield by 30 – 90%.
- The use of Roundup herbicide can reduce the cost of weeding. Manual and mechanized weeding can be expensive; this can eat deep into the profit of the farmer.
- Roundup herbicide has long term weed control ability.
- It can work on weeds in a wide range of weather conditions.
- Roundup has a fast action on weeds and ensures good control of weeds.
- Roundup herbicide is compatible with other products.
How to Use Roundup Herbicide
Roundup herbicide should be sprayed to the weeds before planting.
Planting should be done 24 hours after spraying the herbicide to the weeds. This will allow optimal uptake of the herbicide by the weeds.
Knapsack spraying: 1 Litre of Roundup herbicide per 150 litres of water
Ground spraying equipment: 70-150L spray solution per ha at low pressure.
Precautions:
- It should be sprayed on target weeds. Shields can be used to prevent the spraying of your main crops.
- It should not be sprayed if the wind speed is above 15 kilometres per hour
- Do not allow spray mist to drift to undesired crop or vegetation.
- Do not use very acidic water to mix the Roundup herbicide.
- Spray actively growing weeds before planting (increases absorption at a lower rate).
