Venturi Injector for Irrigation
A venturi injector is one of the most important components of a typical drip irrigation system. It is also called a fertilizer injector because it is used for the injection of soluble fertilizers into the drip irrigation system.
A venturi injector is a device used for the mixing or injecting liquid into a stream of flowing water.
A venturi injector works based on the principle of differential pressure.
Water flowing from the source of water through a pipe of hose enters the venturi injector at a higher pressure and exits at a lesser pressure; this makes the device to create a vacuum that sucks up the liquid solution in the tank it is attached to.
Sections of a Typical Venturi Injector (Fertilizer Injector for Drip Irrigation)

A typical venturi injector has sections; these sections are explained as follows:
Injector Inlet: This is the section of the venturi injector which allows water to flow through it. The pressure of water entering the device through the inlet is always higher.
Injector Outlet: This is the section of the venturi injector that exits the water. It is described as the back pressure of the venturi injector’s outlet.
Motive Flow: This the volume of water the venturi injector can process.
Air Suction: This is the allowable limit of air the venturi injector can suck.
Characteristics of a Fertilizer Injector (Venturi Injector for Drip Irrigation)

It is made of polythene or plastic. The type of plastic used can last for a very long time.
It is tolerant to almost all types of chemicals and harsh substances used in farming.
It is not mechanical and largely maintenance free.
It is relatively cheap and affordable to almost all farmers.
It injects precise doses of chemicals and fertilizers to flowing water in a drip irrigation system.
How to install a Venturi Injector (Fertilizer Injector for Drip Irrigation)

Installation of a venturi injector for drip irrigation is fairly easy. You can also ask an experienced plumber or irrigation engineer to assist you.
You just need to connect the venturi injector to the sub-main pipe of the irrigation system.
The venturi injector has an arrow showing the direction of flow of water. You should install the venturi injector in line with the direction of the arrow.
A wrong direction of water flow will not make the venturi injector function well.
Uses of a Venturi Injector (Fertilizer Injector for Drip Irrigation)

A venturi injector as one of the components of a drip irrigation system is usually used for the injection of liquid and gases into a flowing liquid or gas. For drip irrigation system, a venturi injector is used for the flowing:
Fertigation
This is the process of injecting liquid or soluble fertilizer to the water flowing in an irrigation system.
Fertigation allows for the easy addition of fertilizers to irrigation water. For drip irrigation, fertigation allows for the dosing and injection of fertilizer to the roots of every plant in a precise format.
Fertigation has been proven to significantly improve yield, provide exact and equal doses of fertilizers to every plant, reduce labour needed for fertilizer application, reduce the quantity of fertilizer to be used and also reduce the effects of nutrients leaching.
Chemigation
This is the application of chemicals to flowing or spraying water during irrigation. A venturi injector can be used for chemigation.
Chemicals like nematicides, fungicides, insecticides and bactericides can be applied to the roots of every plant during drip irrigation cycle with the aid of a venturi injector.
Plant roots infected with fungi and other pests can be treated through the injection of pesticides to the roots of every plant through the use of a venturi injector.
Advantages of using a venturi injector (Fertilizer Injector for Drip Irrigation)
The following are the advantages of using a fertilizer injector in a drip irrigation system:
A venturi injector enables the application of fertigation. Fertigation improves the yield of crops through the precise and exact application of required doses of fertilizers to crops.
An increase in yield can lead to an increase in revenue and profit for farmers.
Fertigation enabled by a venturi injector can also significantly reduce the labour required for the application of fertilizers and pesticides. This can go a long way in reducing costs for farmers.
Types of Fertilizers that can be passed through a venturi injector
The following are some of the fertilizers that can be passed through a venturi injector:
- NPK Fertilizer
- Calcium Nitrate
- Potassium Nitrate
- Chelate
- Mono Ammonium Phosphate
- Mono Potassium Phosphate
- Humates (Humic Acid and Fluvic Acid)
- Urea
- Potassium Sulfate
- Potassium Chloride (Muriate of Potash) etc
Types of Chemicals that can be passed through a venturi injector

A venturi injector can be used to inject various types of chemicals and pesticides to the root zones of crops, these chemicals and pesticides are explained below:
Fungicides: Chemicals used for the treatment of fungal diseases can be passed to plants through a venturi injector or fertilizer injector.
Systemic fungicides can be passed to plants through their roots. Venturi injectors can make this possible.
Insecticides: These are chemicals or substances used for the killing of insects that are harmful to plants.
Systemic insecticides can be passed to the root zones of plants through a fertilizer injector.
Bactericides: These are chemicals or substances used for the treatment of bacterial diseases in plants. A venturi injector can be used to pass bactericides to plants.
Acaricides: These are also called miticides. They are chemicals or substances used for the treatment of mites attacks on plants. They can be applied to plants with the aid of a venturi injector.
Nematicides: These are chemicals or substances used for the treatment of nematode attacks on plants. Nematodes often attack the roots of plants.
A Case Study of a Farmer using a Venturi Injector (Fertilizer Injector for Drip Irrigation)
Kemi has been a tomato farmer for over 10 years in Iseyin, Oyo State, she uses flood irrigation to irrigate her crop every year.
Kemi manages to get a yield of 3 tonnes per acre every season from her tomato farm. She usually applies fertilizers and pesticides to her tomato crop by hand.
We met Kemi in Iseyin during our farmers’ meet and greet session. We advised Kemi to try drip irrigation with a venturi injector.
Kemi installed drip irrigation system on a one acre tomato farmland as a trial.
Kemi fertigated fertilizers twice a week to her tomato plants through the use of a venturi injector.
Kemi realized a yield of 25 tons per acre, thanks to fertigation with the aid of a venturi injector.
Kemi also recorded some savings on the cost of hiring labourers for fertilizer and pesicides application.
